How do I measure stairs for handrails?

The minimum length of a residential handrail is measured from the nosing of the bottom step to the nosing of the landing.

For a superior installation that conforms to the ADA, or for any commercial application, measure from a point on the floor one tread depth in front of the bottom step. At the upper landing, extend the handrail horizontally for at least one foot.
